How Old Do You Have to Be to DoorDash? Age Rules by State

The DoorDash age requirement is 18, but 19 in 13 states and 21 in California. Here's the state-by-state list and your options.

DoorDash age requirement by state: 18 in most states, 19 in 13 states, 21 in California

Ask around how old you have to be to DoorDash and plenty of sites will still say “18, everywhere.” That’s the old answer, and the DoorDash age requirement has moved on.

DoorDash’s own Dasher page now says the minimum age is 18, but 19 in 13 states and 21 in California for new applicants. So the real DoorDash age requirement depends on where you live. Under 18, you can’t Dash at all, with a car or a bike.

This guide gives you the exact DoorDash age requirement by state, what else DoorDash asks for, how the age rules compare with Uber Eats and Grubhub, and what to do if you’re not old enough yet. I don’t deliver for DoorDash myself, so everything here comes from the company’s own pages and the IRS, and I flag where something wasn’t clear. There are no affiliate links in this guide.

Last updated: October 2026. DoorDash can change these rules, so check the sign-up page before you apply.

Key Takeaways

  • The baseline DoorDash age requirement is 18. Some states set it higher: 19 in Arizona, Colorado, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Idaho, Kentucky, Montana, New Jersey, New Mexico, Texas, Utah and West Virginia, and 21 in California for new applicants (DoorDash).
  • The DoorDash age requirement doesn’t drop for bikes or scooters. DoorDash lists the same minimum age whichever way you deliver, and bikes are only allowed in select cities.
  • Under 18 means no Dashing, and no borrowing someone else’s account. Anyone who helps you Dash needs their own Dasher account.
  • Your first $400 of net earnings is where taxes start. Once you’ve netted $400 from self-employment in a year, the IRS charges 15.3% self-employment tax (IRS).
  • Age is only the first gate. You also need a smartphone, a background check, and a license plus insurance if you deliver by car.

What Is the DoorDash Age Requirement?

The DoorDash age requirement is 18 years old as a baseline, but the minimum is 19 in 13 states and 21 in California. If you meet your state’s age and the other requirements, you can sign up for a Dasher account. If you don’t, DoorDash won’t approve you, whatever vehicle you plan to use.

If you are also looking at Uber Eats, our guide to driving for Uber Eats covers its requirements and what to expect before you apply.

Here’s the DoorDash age requirement by state, as DoorDash states it on its help page.

Minimum ageWhere it applies
21California (new applicants only; active California Dashers aren’t affected)
19Arizona, Colorado, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Idaho, Kentucky, Montana, New Jersey, New Mexico, Texas, Utah, West Virginia
18Every other state

Two things stand out. First, California is the strictest, and the rule applies to new applicants, so someone already Dashing there keeps their account. Second, the 19 list includes some of the biggest delivery markets in the country, such as Texas, Florida and Georgia. If you’re 18 and you live in one of them, you’ll have to wait.

Why is the DoorDash age requirement higher in some states? DoorDash’s pages don’t say. My guess is insurance and local rules, but that’s a guess, not something I can source.

How Old Do You Have to Be to DoorDash in Texas, Florida or California?

In Texas and Florida you need to be 19, and in California you need to be 21 if you’re a new applicant. The same 19-year-old rule covers Arizona, Colorado, Delaware, Georgia, Idaho, Kentucky, Montana, New Jersey, New Mexico, Utah and West Virginia.

This is the part older articles get wrong, and it’s the part that sends people to the application form for nothing. Check the DoorDash age requirement for your state in the table above before you spend time on a background check. If you’re on the border, say 18 in Georgia or 20 in California, the practical choice is to wait for your birthday, or look at work that doesn’t have an age gate that high (more on that below).

Can You DoorDash at 16 or 17?

No. The DoorDash age requirement starts at 18, and its own page doesn’t offer a younger track. That also means you shouldn’t use a parent’s or friend’s account to deliver, and I’d stay away from anyone who offers to rent you one. The help page says that anyone who helps you Dash must also have a valid Dasher account of their own, which rules out the “I’ll just ride along and help” idea for a minor.

If you’re 16 or 17 and you want to earn, there’s plenty of work you can do around school. For ideas that fit your age, start with how to make money as a teenager. Pet care, yard work, tutoring and selling things you own are the easiest starts, and odd jobs can bring in cash within days. For the wider menu, see ways to make money. Check your own state’s rules for working under 18, because I haven’t confirmed them for every state.

Does the Age Change if You Deliver by Bike or Scooter?

Not on DoorDash: the DoorDash age requirement is the same for every vehicle. Its help page gives one age rule per state, whatever you drive, and its Dasher page says bikes are only allowed in select cities. If you deliver by bike only, you still need a valid driver’s license or another government photo ID.

Other apps do treat vehicles differently. Uber Eats lists 18 for walking or biking, but 19 for a scooter, motorbike or car. If you’re 18 in a state where DoorDash says 19, a bike on Uber Eats could be your way in. I’d read the next section before you decide.

How Do the Age Rules Compare With Uber Eats and Grubhub?

The DoorDash age requirement is the most state-specific of the three. Uber Eats uses a vehicle-based rule, and Grubhub has a simple 18 with one city exception. Here’s what each company’s official page says right now.

AppMinimum ageNotes
DoorDash18, or 19 in 13 states, or 21 in CaliforniaSame age for every vehicle
Uber Eats18 on bike or foot; 19 for scooter or motorbike; 19 for a car, or 21 in California and New YorkSSN needed for the background check
Grubhub18, or 21 in Las VegasDepends on your market

Sources: DoorDash, Uber, Grubhub.

So if you’re 18 and DoorDash says 19 where you live, Grubhub may take you in most places, and Uber Eats takes you on a bike or on foot. If you’re 19 or 20 in California, DoorDash and Uber Eats won’t take you by car, though Grubhub’s page lists 18 everywhere except Las Vegas. For a closer look at one more option, see my guide on whether Amazon Flex is worth it. For a wider comparison, see best gig apps.

One caution: these rules can change by market, and I only read the pages as they are today. Treat the table as a starting point and confirm on the app’s own sign-up page.

What Else Do You Need to Dash?

Beyond the DoorDash age requirement, you need a smartphone and a way to deliver. DoorDash says there are no specific vehicle requirements, but delivering by car takes a valid domestic driver’s license and personal auto insurance. Depending on your location you may also be able to use a motorcycle, scooter, bike or e-bike.

You’ll also need to pass a background check. DoorDash says it needs your Social Security number for that, to confirm you’re eligible to work as a contractor. Its page doesn’t say what the check covers or who runs it, so I can’t tell you what would fail it.

On insurance, DoorDash says it carries a commercial auto policy of up to $1,000,000 for third-party injury or property damage during an active delivery. But you’re an independent contractor, and you have to keep your own insurance as the law requires, or the company’s coverage may not apply. I’d call your insurer before your first delivery and ask how they treat delivery driving. Some personal policies don’t cover it.

What Does DoorDash Pay, and Is It Worth It?

DoorDash doesn’t publish a dollar figure, so I won’t make one up. Its page says base pay depends on the estimated time, the distance and how desirable the order is, and that tips and promotions can add to it. What I can do is show you how to check whether it’s worth it for you.

Treat this as an example, not a promise, because the numbers are made up and round. Say you earn $22 in an hour of Dashing and you drive 15 miles. The IRS sets the 2026 business mileage rate at 72.5 cents a mile, so 15 miles is about $10.88 (IRS). That leaves about $11 an hour before taxes. And that’s before you count the time you waited for orders.

The honest question isn’t “what does the app say it pays?” It’s “what’s left after my car and my taxes?” Track your miles, your hours and your tips for the first two weeks. Then do the math with the formula from my guide to side hustles, which divides what you keep by every hour you spent.

What About Taxes?

Nobody withholds tax from a Dasher’s payouts, because Dashers are independent contractors. Once you’ve netted $400 in a year, the IRS charges self-employment tax of 15.3%: 12.4% for Social Security and 2.9% for Medicare, on top of regular income tax. Keep a mileage log from day one and set aside a slice of every payout for taxes. The details are in my guide to financial planning for gig workers. I’m not a tax professional, so check your own situation with one or with the IRS.

How Do You Sign Up Once You Qualify?

Check the DoorDash age requirement for your state in the table, then follow these steps. DoorDash says signing up takes a few minutes and approved Dashers can start soon after, often within days.

  1. Pick your vehicle and make sure you have a valid license and insurance if it’s a car.
  2. Start the application on DoorDash’s Dasher site and enter your details.
  3. Complete the background check with your Social Security number.
  4. Set up how you get paid. Instant cash-out is available but needs an eligible account.
  5. Do a short test run in a quiet hour and track your first week before you commit more time.

FAQ

How old do you have to be to DoorDash?

You have to be at least 18 to DoorDash. In 13 states the minimum is 19, and in California it is 21 for new applicants. DoorDash applies the same age rule to every vehicle, so being on a bike doesn’t lower it.

Can you DoorDash at 17?

No. DoorDash requires Dashers to be at least 18 and doesn’t offer a younger option. Using someone else’s account to deliver isn’t allowed either, because anyone who helps you Dash must have a Dasher account of their own.

How old do you have to be to DoorDash in Texas?

The DoorDash age requirement in Texas is 19. The same minimum applies in Florida, Georgia, Arizona, Colorado, Delaware, Idaho, Kentucky, Montana, New Jersey, New Mexico, Utah and West Virginia. California requires 21 for new applicants.

Can you DoorDash with a bike at 18?

DoorDash doesn’t give a lower age for bikes, so in states where the minimum is 19 or 21, an 18-year-old can’t Dash by bike either. Bikes are only allowed in select cities, and you need a driver’s license or another photo ID.

What documents do you need to DoorDash?

You need a smartphone and a Social Security number for the background check. If you deliver by car, you also need a valid domestic driver’s license and valid personal auto insurance. Bike-only Dashers need a license or another government photo ID.

The Bottom Line

The DoorDash age requirement is 18, with 19 and 21 in the places listed above, and there’s no way around it with a bike or a borrowed account. Check your state first, then compare Uber Eats and Grubhub if you’re a year or two short.

My advice: if you don’t meet the DoorDash age requirement yet, don’t waste a week on the application. Spend that week building money you can earn now, then come back on your birthday with a plan to track your real hourly rate. And if DoorDash has changed its rules by the time you read this, send me a message through the contact page so I can update the guide.
